Wilhelm Berger (1861-1911), Clarinet Trio op. 94
The third program of the Rencontres Musicales presents rare and fascinating works for clarinet trio. It includes a newly discovered trio by Carl Frühling, as well as two seldom-performed trios by Wilhelm Berger and the Swiss composer Richard Flury.
The title “Frühling” carries a double meaning: it refers both to “spring” (in German Frühling) and to the “revival” of these three exquisite works, while also paying tribute to the name of one of the composers.
This program not only offers a rare opportunity to hear these beautiful pieces but also invites the audience to immerse themselves in the deeply emotional and expressive soundscapes of Romanticism. Each of these trios is a unique example of the musical richness and complexity of the era. Particularly noteworthy is the blend of familiar Romantic elements and innovative harmonic approaches, which make these works an unforgettable experience.

Founded in 2021, the Varga Trio was born out of a deep friendship and a shared passion for chamber music. The ensemble brings together Hungarian clarinetist Erika Varga, German pianist Julia Pleninger, and Russian cellist Valentina Dubrovina, who offer a fresh and dynamic approach to the classical clarinet trio repertoire.
Their performances highlight both celebrated masterpieces and lesser-known works, while their commitment to expanding the repertoire includes original arrangements and collaborations with contemporary composers.
At the end of 2021, the trio won first prize at the Danubia Talents Music Competition, marking the beginning of their international concert career. They regularly perform at festivals and concert halls in Switzerland, Germany, and Italy, captivating audiences with their expressive interpretations and innovative programming.
